    Prof. Markus Wolf

    was born in Vienna and since 1989 has been principal conductor at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He studied the violin at age six at the Vienna Music Academy, from 1978 in the class of Günter Pichler. In addition, he had viola and chamber music lessons with Hatto Bayerle. In 1983 he received the soloist diploma with distinction. Further lessons with Max Rostal, Nathan Milstein, Oscar Shumsky and Sandor Vegh. 1983-1989 assistant to Günter Pichler. As a violist, he played with his brothers in the "Wolf Trio" and in 1986 accepted an invitation from the "Alban Berg Quartet," to play the string quintets of Mozart together and to record them for EMI. He has performed together with, amongst others, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Sir Colin Davis, Zubin Mehta, Kent Nagano, Peter Schneider, Marcello Viotti and Ivor Bolton. In 1981 he founded the "Beethoven Trio Vienna" and numerous CD recordings include Beethoven's Triple Concerto with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and Philippe Entremont. From 1997-2002 Wolf was very engaged as guest concertmaster of the London Symphony Orchestra. From 2000 to 2008 he taught at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich and since 2005 also as the successor of Denes Zsigmondy at the Music Academy Augsburg. Since 2008 he has taught violin class at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich. In recognition of his services to the Bavarian State Opera he was awarded in 2000 the title of "Bavarian Chamber Virtuoso". In 2012 he received an "Echo Classic Prize" for the CD recording of the horn trios by Brahms, Ligeti and Koechlin. Markus Wolf plays the "Vollrath Stradivarius" from 1722.
